New Episode — Life Support Podcast

S1E2 · Life Support Reloaded

When Doctors Stop Waiting and Start Building

Why two emergency physicians, Dr. Dev Dash and Dr. Andy Chu, decided to stop waiting for someone else to fix healthcare and started building their own solutions instead; how their innovation lab creates AI tools grounded in the messy reality of real emergency departments; why the question isn't just what AI can do, but what has to stay human; how innovation can amplify connection instead of eroding it; and how the people closest to a problem are often the ones best equipped to solve it. Hosted by Bonnie Kim, Director of Narrative Research and Education at CCARE.

SAEM Webinar November 4, 2026 #StopTheStigmaEM

Stop the Stigma EM Month

Don't Break Your Back for a Broken System

Storytelling, Self-Compassion, and Moral Injury in the Emergency Department

This Stop the Stigma EM Month webinar, sponsored by the SAEM Wellness Committee, explores how storytelling and self-compassion can help physicians process moral injury, reconnect with meaning, and recognize when experiences carried as personal failures may reflect larger systemic challenges. Drawing on Life Support and Stanford CCARE's work in compassion education, participants will consider ways to protect the compassion that brought them to medicine, restore a sense of agency, and move from private suffering toward shared understanding and meaningful change.

How Doctors and Patients Save Each Other in a Broken Healthcare System

Dr. Andrew Chu shares how human connection and compassion saves patients and doctors.

A Harvard-trained emergency physician, Stanford professor, and award-winning filmmaker, Dr. Chu speaks openly about burnout and moral injury, and the moments of connection that kept him showing up. His story became Life Support, an award-winning short film that grew into a broader Stanford effort using storytelling, research, and education to make the human realities of healthcare visible.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

A Movement to Humanize Healthcare

Life Support is a program of Stanford CCARE that uses storytelling, film, podcasts, and lived experience to illuminate the human realities of healthcare. By connecting these stories with compassion science, reflection, research, and education, Life Support helps turn what is often carried privately into greater understanding and opportunities for change.

CARE NEEDS CARE

The numbers tell the story.

CARE NEEDS CARE

When physicians feel drained, and patients feel unheard, trust and quality of care suffer.

50–65% of emergency physicians report burnout symptoms
70% of Americans say healthcare is in crisis
